Plainsmen Sweep Dodge City

Feb. 23, 2007

Freshman James Quisenberry made sure the NJC baseball team moved to 2-0 on the season. The 6-7 lefty from Denver-Ponderosa High School picked up his first win of his college career at Dodge City on Friday in the second game of a twinbill.

Quisenberry surrendered just five hits in seven innings in NJC's 14-4 win. The south paw threw just 90 pitches to record the complete game.

"It was OK. I had a solid front arm," Quisenberry said. "I didn't have a curve ball and I walked the nine hole in four straight pitches. But it feels pretty good to get a complete game for my first time out. I got some run support, so I just wanted to keep my team in a position to win the game."

Laramie, Wyo., freshman Josh Warren led the NJC offense with five hits. He had a stolen base, a run scored and two RBIs.

"Josh is the catalyst to our offense," NJC Head Coach Bryan Shepherd said. "Any time he's on base we have a good chance of scoring a run. Josh is a tremendous athlete on both sides of the baseball. He's going to play a big part in how successful the Plainsmen are this year."

The Plainsmen lined out 17 hits as a team including a 3-for-4 performance by shortstop Gus Velazquez. Velazquez had a single, double and a solo home run.

NJC finishes a six-game road swing in Liberal, Kan.; where they take Seward County on Feb. 24 and 25.
