Plainsmen drop first two in Pima Classic

The Northeastern Junior College baseball team fell to 11-7 on the season by dropping its first two games of the Pima Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

The Plainsmen lost a 3-0 decision to No. 6 Indian Hills on Wednesday. Baton Rouge sophomore Derrick Townsend picked up the loss. Townsend surrendered three runs in the first inning but settled down to go the distance.

Laramie, Wyo., freshman Josh Warren led NJC at the plate with two hits.

Arizona Western held off NJC, 5-4, on Thursday in Tucson.

Freshman James Quisenberry picked up his second loss of the season. Quisenberry carried the Plainsmen through the fifth inning. Las Vegas freshman Justin Mattelka came on in the sixth to finish an inning and two-thirds of scoreless work for NJC.

NJC fell behind, 2-0, early in the game. The Plainsmen picked up their first hit of the game in the fifth inning. Omaha sophomore Langston Frison's RBI groundout got the Plainsmen their first run. Las Vegas freshman John Matey doubled in two runs in the fifth to put NJC in the lead, 3-2.

Arizona Western answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory.
