March 25, 2007

The Northeastern Junior College baseball team took two games from McCook on Sunday. The Plainsmen improved to 5-1 in Region IX and 16-7-1, overall.

Baton Rouge sophomore Derrick Townsend picked up his third win of the year in Game one. Townsend went the distance, giving up three runs in seven innings.

Sterling native Jeff Squire and Loveland freshman Danny Brock led the NJC attack at the plate with two hits each.

Squier had a double and three RBIs. Brock chipped in two singles and scored three runs.

Laramie sophomore Mike Mendenhall stole three bases and scored two runs.

Second baseman Curtis Burback's two-RBI single in the fifth inning sealed the deal for NJC.

In the second game of the doubleheader, freshman lefty James Quisenberry baffled McCook hitters for six innings. Quisenberry gave up a double in the second inning which marked McCook's only hit.

The Plainsmen offense got rolling early and forced a 10-0, run-rule after six innings.

Freshmen Jose Collazo and Rhett Welsh each plated runs in the first inning with RBI groundouts, and NJC never looked back.

Collazo knocked in a second run in the fourth inning. The freshman also stole a base and scored a run.

Las Vegas, Nev., freshman Justin Mattelka blasted a two-out triple in the fifth. Freshman Josh Warren followed with an RBI single to put NJC up 9-0.
