May 7, 2007
The Northeastern Junior College baseball team swept a doubleheader at Trinidad on Saturday to finish the regular season at 26-23 overall and 15-15 in Region IX. The Plainsmen ride a three-game win streak into the Region IX Tournament which begins May. 11. Trinidad held the top spot in the conference and was set to host the Region IX Tournament before NJC won three of the four games in the series. And with Lamar's 8-3 victory over Trinidad on Sunday, the Region IX Tournament will be held at Lamar. In the first game on Saturday, freshman Ty Cardona had a no-hitter through six complete innings before giving up a single to start the seventh. Two wild pitches later the Trinidad runner scored but the Plainsmen took the game, 6-1. Jeff Squier and Danny Brock each hit home runs to lead the Plainsmen to the win in Game One. Brock led NJC with three hits and Squier had two. Brock was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. NJC sophomore Mike Mendenhall scored two runs and stole a base. The Plainsmen fell behind, 5-0, after two innings in the second game. But NJC clawed back and won the game in extra innings, 8-6. Sophomore Jesus Colon threw five innings in relief for NJC, and sophomore Aaron Howe threw a scoreless seventh inning. Brock pitched the eighth to record the win. Northeastern scored three runs in the fourth inning to fight back into the game. Colton Williams did the damage with a two-out, two-RBI single. The Plainsmen scored twice more in the fifth.
