Plainsmen stay hot at home with victory over Laramie County

Jan. 30, 2008

The Northeastern Junior College (NJC) Plainsmen extended their home winning streak to an even 50 games with an 75-53 win over Laramie County, Wyo. Community College Tuesday.

Offensively, the Plainsmen were led by sophomore Troy Smith who led all scorers by putting up 19 points on the night while freshman Alex Garcia-Mendoza chipped in with 11 and freshman A.J. Wilson added 10. Wilson had a double-double on the night as he also was able to grab 10 rebounds as well.

All but one person on the NJC roster scored in the victory. On Saturday NJC won a big South Sub-Region game at Lamar Community College, 69-59. Lamar tried to slow the tempo of the game down, but it didn't work as NJC still picked up the win. Smith and Dominguez each scored 15 points and A.J. Wilson knocked in 11.

On Wednesday (Jan. 23) the Plainsmen hosted Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) and former NJC Coach Brian Joyce. The Plainsmen didn't let up the entire game as they surpassed the century mark for the fourth time this year with a 106-84 win. Six Plainsmen reached doubledigits as Dominguez and Garcia each scored 18 points, Lewis and Smith had 16 apiece, Wilson 12 and Tyson 10.

NJC, 20-3, broke into the top 25 this week in the NJCAA polls and are ranked 24th in the nation. The Plainsmen will play at Otero Junior College Thursday and at Eastern Wyoming Saturday before returning home Wednesday (Feb. 6) against Lamar.

NJC's last home loss came on Jan. 22, 2005, in an 88-81 overtime defeat to WNCC.
