Plainsmen Open Season With Wins At Husky Classic

The Northeastern Junior College (NJC) Plainsmen basketball team started out the season by winning three games in the annual Husky Classic last week in Colorado Springs. On Thursday NJC exploded on offense for a 97-56 win over Peterson Air Force Base. On Friday the Plainsmen followed up with an 84-64 victory over New Mexico Military Institute. NJC closed out the tournament Saturday with a 69-56 triumph over Air Force Prep. Members of the defending Region IX champion Plainsmen basketball team this year are sophomores Eric Miller of Aurora; Tyson Lawrence of Lancaster, Calif.; Jeron Lewis of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Kylor Dossett of Silverthorne; Tom Chott of Littleton; Troy Smith of Baltimore, Md.; DeRay Wilson (RS) of Anchorage, Alaska and Mike Dominguez of Espanola, N.M. The freshmen are Brent Fiscus (RS) of Merino; Alexander Garcia- Mendoza of ElFuerte, Mexico; Adam Rabih of Denver; A.J. Wilson of St. Paul, Minn. and DeMario Partee of Racine, Wis. Eddie Trenkle is entering his second year as head coach of the Plainsmen after leading the team to the Region IX Tournament title last year and consolation champions of the NJCAA National Tournament. Assistant coaches are D'Marr Suggs and Aaron Prestwich. NJC will open at home this weekend in the Bank of Colorado Shootout. On Friday the Plainsmen will play Miles City, Mont. Community College at 7:30 p.m. and will close out the tournament Saturday against the Pueblo All-Stars. Tip-off for that game is also at 7:30 p.m. On Monday NJC will play in Cheyenne, Wyo. against Laramie County, Wyo. Community College at 6 p.m.
