NJC women roll over Ft. Carson
Jan. 21, 2008
The Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen wrapped up play at the Roy Edwards Memorial Classic with a 2-0 record, after earning a 79-53 victory over Fort Carson Military Saturday night. The win comes right after a 60-47 victory over Northwest Wyoming the following evening. NJC improves to 17-3, heading into a big contest with Western Nebraska, Wednesday, Jan. 23.
The coaching staff the team had struggled a bit in their last two games, but seemed to come out a bit more in Saturday's win. Northeastern had even distribution offensively, with a season-high 13 women score at least one-point in the contest.
NJC took advantage of some early steals that led to baskets on their end, taking an early lead. The team shot 47 percent from the field, taking advantage of poor shooting by Ft. Carson to advance their lead to double-figures rather quickly. The Plainswomen were up 41-24 at halftime.
Northeastern didn't have to do much more in the second half, especially with the team getting 14 attempts from the free-throw line. The team finished 18-23 on the evening. Freshman Stacy Howard continues to have an impressive freshman campaign going, collecting 16 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots Saturday. Freshmen Jacqie Neill and Kristy Henderson each had 10 points for the Plainswomen off the bench, followed by Jennifer Garner with seven. NJC out-rebounded Ft. Carson 52-36 and had seven more assists than their opponent.
Next up for the Plainswomen is a big region contest between conference foe Western Nebraska at the Bank of Colorado Event Center. W. Nebraska comes in with a 17-3 record and are winners of 13 straight.
