By Anthony Arroyo Journal-Advocate sports reporter
TORRINGTON, Wyo. -- The Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen finished the game against Eastern Wyoming with 11 players scoring at least two points, as the team recorded a solid 70-60 victory on the road Saturday evening. The win comes after a heartbreak defeat from Otero two nights prior. NJC improves to 21-4 with the win.
Northeastern shot the ball 40 percent in the first half, but the defensive play by the Plainswomen allowed Eastern Wyoming to shoot just 27 percent, allowing itself to jump out to a comfortable 40-25 advantage at halftime. On the night, NJC had 16 steals, with freshman Jacqie Neill recording a team-high four, to go along with eight points and three assists.
Eastern Wyoming began to light it up from behind the arc in the second half, nailing six of its nine three's. Meanwhile, Northeastern was taking advantage of second chance points to keep its lead in safe hands.
NJC out-rebounded its opponent by 12, and had a 21-13 advantage on the offensive boards. This allowed Northeastern to hold a 24-8 edge in second chance points. Sophomore Sarah Conner had 11 points, to go hand-in-hand with six rebounds and six assists. Sophomores Jennifer Garner and Kristen Forbes each had nine points, while freshman Stacy Howard finished with nine points and nine rebounds in the victory.
The bench also played a good role, outscoring Eastern's bench, 31-18.
The Plainswomen will have two home games this week, with the first coming Wednesday, Feb. 6, against Lamar Community College.
NJC is also home when the Plainswomen host a tough Casper team Friday night at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.
