Wyoming Natives Push Plainswomen Past Northwest
Feb. 10, 2007
The Northeastern Junior College women's basketball team moved to 21-5 on the season with a 55-44 win at Northwest Wyoming in Cheyenne on Friday. Coach Darrel Parker's team continued its frantic defensive effort by holding Northwest to just four field goals in the first half. The Plainswomen took a 31-24 lead into halftime on the strength of a red-hot, 58 percent shooting performance from the field in the first half. Guernsey, Wyo.; Freshman Jennifer Garner came off the bench and led NJC in scoring with 15 points. Garner made 6-of-9 from the perimeter while knocking down all three of her free-throw attempts. She also pulled down seven rebounds and added a steal to her stellar night. Parker said Garner's "homecoming" performance came at a perfect time. "We didn't have a good shooting night at all, but she gave us that offensive spark that we needed," Parker said. "She did it in front of a lot of her home fans, so I think that gave her some extra motivation. She played fast and took advantage of a few breakaways. She had her best game of the year by far." Daria Basova recorded another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore from Moscow was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line while chipping in two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Freshman Sarah Conner scored ten and pulled down eight rebounds. The other half of the Guernsey, Wyo.; duo also contributed three steals, a blocked shot and an assist. |
