Western Nebraska Balanced Scoring Proves Too Much For NJC

Western Nebraska hit 12-of-14 free throws in the second half to get by Northeastern Junior College, 69-54, Tuesday in Scottsbluff. NJC forced a 31-31 deadlock at halftime. But the Plainswomen shot just 32 percent from the field in the second half as Western Nebraska finished with four players scoring in double figures. Sophomore forward Jackie Davis tried to keep NJC within reach, scoring 14 points and pulling down five rebounds. Davis passed out four assists and hit 2-of-4 from three-point land. NJC had two other players in double figures in scoring. Plainswomen leading scorer Daria Basova was held to just seven points. But the sophomore from Moscow, Russia; pulled down a game-high, 10 rebounds. Roni Whitman scored 13 and was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. The sophomore from Peetz had three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Sarah Conner had 11 points and eight rebounds. The freshman added two assists and three steals. Despite the loss in the season finale, the Plainswomen finished the regular season at 23-6 overall as champions of the South Sub Region. The Region IX Tournament begins Mar. 3 in Casper, Wyo. |
