NJC guard Jennifer Garner is hopping to get back on the court for the Region IX Tournament

Plainswomen suffer road loss

Feb. 25, 2008

Final Stats

The Plainswomen knew the Western Nebraska Cougars would be set on revenge after being blown out, 79-61, on Northeastern's home court less than a month ago, and they were right. The Plainswomen knew it would be a tough game, especially playing without three key players out do to injury, Silke Forstmann, Jennifer Garner, and Stacey Howard.

The Cougars came out firing on all cylinders as they dominated play dropping the Plainswomen 87-49. "We just couldn't match their intensity. They pretty much dominated from start to finish," said Head Coach Darrel Parker. "They obviously had something to prove. I am not sure if having those three in the mix would have made much of a difference, Western played really well."

The score was tied 15-15 midway through the first half, but that was as close as the Plainswomen would get. A quick run put the cougars up 23-16. Still playing tough, NJC would get within 2 points on a Saundra Proctor basket, but Western responded with back-to-back three pointers and pulled out to a 34-24 halftime lead.

The second half saw much of the same as Western Nebraska poured it on outscoring the Plainswomen 53-25. NJC would have no answer and could not mount a comeback.

"WNCC looked inside a lot more this game. Having some of our size missing inside they definitely took advantage of some of the matchups. We just never really responded to what they were doing. They are a quality team. We need to play a lot better if we expect to win," said Parker.

NJC moves on to face McCook, on Thursday, in the final regular season game of the year. The Plainswomen then gear up for the Region IX tournament to be held at Miles City, in Miles Montana, starting Saturday March, 1st as the Plainswomen take on Little Big Horn, in opening round action. "Hopefully we can get healthy and have everyone back for the tournament. We will have to wait and see what happens," said Parker.
