Plainswomen Outlast Doanne JV In Season Opener

Nov. 6, 2006

Final Stats

Head Coach Darrel Parker recorded his first victory at NJC, leading the Plainswomen to a 60-49 win over Doanne JV.

Parker stuck to his defensive-minded philosophy going into the season. A philosophy that stesses defense and that was so successful for so many years leading Sterling High School.

"Our defensive intensity was good all weekend long," Parker said. "Our size is limited so blocking out and controlling the defensive boards is a big factor in our success. We have to use our quickness to our advantage."

The Plainswomen led Doane at halftime, 29-26, but fell behind early in the second half.

Doane led 36-30 with 14:55 to play when Parker's crew turned the corner. Sara Parker and Sarah Conner executed back-to back, old-fashioned three-point plays to give the Plainswomen a 41-36 lead with 9:50 to play.

Roni Whitman led NJC with 15 points and four assists. The sophomore from Peetz was three-for-five from beyond the three-point line.

Daria Basova dropped in 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Plainswomen on the glass.

Connor added 13 points and three rebounds in her junior college debut.
